Little Daisy was born with an extremely rare disorder called anophthalmia, meaning she had no eyes, Cwmbran, South Wales, UK.
The parents of a newborn baby girl, Ms Davis and her partner Andrew Smith, refused a termination when a routine scan showed the phoetus had a cyst on the brain. But when they saw Daisy first time they were stunned as the girl was born without any eyes and doctors told them she wiil never be able to see. More pix after the cut.......
Anophthalmia is the medical term for the absence of one or both eyes and currently there is not a treatment option for regaining vision by developing a new eye. There are, however, cosmetic options so the absence of the eye is not as noticeable. Typically, the child will need to go to a prosthetic specialist to have conformers fitted into the eye.
Mother-of-three Danielle Davis, 24, said: “It was a shock – we had never heard of it before and neither had any of our friends or family. People didn’t really know what to say when we told them. But she is our gorgeous baby and we have no regrets about turning down a termination. We want to give Daisy as normal a life as possible and give her the same opportunities as other children.”
